As a seasoned backpacker, I often find myself contemplating the age-old debate: pants or shorts? Well, my recent PCT adventure provided an unexpected opportunity to test this theory.
Days 10-12 on the trail were a rollercoaster of weather extremes, from scorching heat to an impending snowstorm. It was the perfect setting to compare the pros and cons of each garment choice.
The Shorts Experiment
Initially, I opted for shorts to combat the heat and for the promise of a cooling breeze. However, after just two days, my legs were a sorry sight - a combination of trail dust, sunscreen, and various scratches and bug bites. It was a messy, itchy situation.
Pants to the Rescue
Switching back to lightweight pants was an instant relief. Not only did they provide protection from the elements, but they also saved my legs from further discomfort. The real test came when I accidentally brushed against a cactus - a painful reminder of the benefits of pants! My legs remained unscathed, while my hands paid the price for that mistake.
Weathering the Storm
As if the temperature swings weren't enough, a pending storm forced us to hitch a ride to Idyllwild. Mount San Jacinto took a beating with wind and snow, causing several hikers to reconsider their plans. The next day, rain poured in town, and the mountains above were expected to drop to a frigid 9 degrees.
A Well-Deserved Break
We decided to take a much-needed break in Idyllwild, a charming town perfect for a zero day. After 1.5 days of rest, we were ready to tackle the trail again, starting from where we left off at PVC.
Final Thoughts
This experience taught me the importance of being adaptable on the trail. While shorts may be tempting in hot weather, the protection and comfort of pants cannot be overlooked, especially in unpredictable conditions. It's all about finding the right balance for your adventure.
Happy trails, and may your legs always be protected!
